Introducing the evolution of the Ulysse Nardin Freak X: smaller, thinner, more robust, more precise, and more versatile, powered by a self-developed micro-rotor engine.

In 2019, Ulysse Nardin launched the Freak X watch. This more compact and refined timepiece was easier to wear and featured a traditional crown. It retained the essence of the original Freak watch (handless, dialless, and crownless) launched in 2001 by the visionary watchmaker Ludwig Oechslin, while making it more suitable for everyday wear and appealing to a wider customer base. Now, to commemorate the brand's 180th anniversary and the 25th anniversary of the Freak watch, Ulysse Nardin proudly presents the completely redesigned second-generation Freak X watch. From the movement and case structure to the winding system, finishing, and ergonomics, almost every component has been reconsidered. The final product is a smaller, more refined, and more complex Freak X watch, while faithfully retaining the original design philosophy.

What's changed?
Compared to the previous generation Freak X, the new model introduces significant changes:

A newly manufactured UN-232 movement (replacing the UN-230), equipped with a micro-rotor.
Case diameter: 41 mm (previously 43 mm).
Luminous distance: 47.3 mm (reduced from the previous 49.6 mm).
Thickness: reduced to 10.35 mm (previously 10.7 mm).
A new monolithic case structure (replacing the previous modular structure).
A new sapphire crystal glass with a larger opening, providing a better visual experience of the movement.

Micro-rotor automatic winding (replacing the previous traditional wound rotor)

The evolution of FREAK X, a brand new in-house movement

For the new generation of Freak X watches, Ulysse Nardin did not stop at changes in appearance, although since the series' inception there have been many stunning models, such as the Freak X Razzle Dazzle, Siliconium Marquetry, Aventurine, Enamel, and Crystalium. The current Freak X is powered by the new in-house UN-232 movement, engineered and developed over two years specifically for the Freak X.

While the watch's exterior remains familiar, its internal movement has been completely redesigned. The new UN-232 movement is more compact, modular, and future-oriented, enabling various decorative and artistic watchmaking techniques. One of the most significant technological innovations lies in the escapement. Ulysse Nardin is using DIAMonSIL technology for the first time in the Freak X series. Developed based on Ulysse Nardin's pioneering research in silicon, DIAMonSIL combines silicon with a diamond-like carbon (DLC) surface treatment to increase hardness, improve efficiency, and reduce wear. By enhancing durability and reducing friction, this technology directly improves the watch's accuracy and long-term reliability. DIAMonSIL technology was first used in the Freak DIAMonSIL watch in 2007.

This movement also retains the oversized silicon balance wheel and silicon hairspring, which have become iconic features of the modern Freak series. These components, manufactured by SIGATEC, a silicon materials specialist company co-founded by Ulysse Nardin, contribute to exceptional stability and resistance to magnetic fields.

Perhaps the most striking mechanical change is on the watch's case back. For the first time in Freak history, a fully integrated rose gold micro-rotor is used for automatic winding. This new design replaces the traditional rotor, allowing Ulysse Nardin to reduce the overall size of the movement while maintaining efficient winding. The micro-rotor is clearly visible through the sapphire crystal case back, adding a touch of warmth to the movement's highly technological appearance.

The movement consists of 216 parts, vibrates at 21,600 times per hour, and provides a power reserve of up to 72 hours, a feature unchanged despite its more compact size.

A smaller, more refined case. The original Freak X had a 43mm diameter. The new generation Freak X features a smaller 41mm case diameter for enhanced comfort, and a reduced lug spacing of 47.3mm. The case thickness is only 10.35mm (13.6mm including the crystal), resulting in a more comfortable and snug fit on the wrist.

The watch's structure has also been revamped. While previous Freak X models used a modular design, the new model features a unibody case, available in either 80% recycled stainless steel or rose gold. According to Ulysse Nardin, this redesign improves the case's structural rigidity and helps minimize the transmission of mechanical vibrations through the case, thus reducing operating noise and enhancing acoustic stability. The screw-down nameplate on the left side has been retained.

The new sapphire crystal glass offers a fresh experience, with a larger opening for a more immersive visual experience. Practicality has also been improved. The addition of a screw-down crown increases water resistance from 50 meters to 100 meters, making the new Freak X more suitable for everyday wear and an active lifestyle.

A Better Finish: Technological innovation has always been the core philosophy of the Freak series, and the new generation of Ulysse Nardin watches elevates craftsmanship to new heights. The movement employs three surface finishes—satin brushing, polishing, and graining—creating a richer sense of depth; the balance bridge and time indicators are adorned with hand-beveled details. Applied hour markers replace traditional bar markers and are filled with Super-LumiNova luminous coating, adding depth to the dial and improving legibility in low-light conditions. Furthermore, the bridges, mainspring barrel, and micro-rotor components feature contrasting finishes, further enhancing the watch's sophistication.

Three New Models: The Ulysse Nardin series introduces three new watches. The Freak X Grey features a recycled stainless steel case with grey sandblasted hour markers and a light brown calfskin strap. The Freak X Blue also uses a recycled stainless steel case with blue gradient satin brushed hour markers and a new integrated stainless steel bracelet. The Freak X Gold features a rose gold case, black sandblasted hour markers, and a black alligator leather strap. All models are equipped with a new quick-release strap system.
