Magnesium implants — is resorption still too fast? (11 อ่าน)

Bioresorbable magnesium implants are an elegant idea, but early versions resorbed too fast and produced hydrogen gas. Have the alloy and coating improvements solved this? Is anyone actually using Mg implants clinically now, or is it still research-stage?

Resorption rate is the question that keeps magnesium implants stuck in the research phase for many applications, so it is good to see it discussed honestly. The early mechanical performance is impressive, but balancing degradation with tissue healing remains a real challenge, and alloying elements, coatings, and surface treatment all shift the timeline. It is also a reminder that adjacent fields offer useful lessons, since Dental Alloys have spent decades refining biocompatibility and controlled behaviour in the mouth. Thanks for raising this.
