The B-52’s combat radius is 8,800 miles without aerial refueling. With refueling, the B-52 can strike any target on earth. The B-52 is a strategic asset. It is also a tactical workhorse. In the Vietnam War, B-52s flew Operation Arc Light missions. Those missions dropped carpet bombs on jungle supply routes. The B-52’s bomb bay doors opened and 108 500-pound bombs fell in a pattern that destroyed everything below. The North Vietnamese called the B-52 the “whispering death” because the bomber arrived before its sound. The B-52’s electronic warfare suite is constantly upgraded. The current AN/ALQ-172 system can jam enemy radar across a wide spectrum of frequencies. The B-52 can also carry the ADM-160 MALD decoy. That decoy mimics the B-52’s radar signature and confuses surface-to-air missile batteries. The B-52 is not stealthy. It does not need to be. The B-52 flies at high altitude and relies on electronic countermeasures and standoff weapons to survive. The B-52 is a bomb truck. It loiters for hours over a battlefield and drops precision munitions on call. In Afghanistan, B-52s provided close air support to ground troops. That radar is derived from the F/A-18E/F Super Hornet. The new radar gives the B-52 the ability to track multiple targets simultaneously and guide precision weapons in all weather. The B-52 will also receive a new digital communications suite. That suite allows the bomber to exchange data with other aircraft and ground stations in real time. The B-52 is becoming a network node. It can receive targeting information from satellites, drones, and other bombers. The B-52 then processes that information and launches weapons. The B-52 is the backbone of the Air Force’s bomber force. The B-1 Lancer is being retired. The B-2 Spirit is too expensive to maintain. The B-21 Raider is entering service slowly. The B-52 remains the most cost-effective bomber in the inventory. Each B-52 costs about $70,000 per flight hour to operate. That is less than half the cost of a B-2 mission. The B-52’s maintenance is straightforward. The airframe is simple. The systems are modular. Replacements parts are readily available. The B-52 is a symbol of American air power. It has flown combat missions in Vietnam, the Gulf War, Kosovo, Afghanistan, Iraq, Libya, and Syria. The B-52 has dropped bombs in every major American conflict since 1965.
