Nước lớn l&agrave; l&uacute;c mực nước d&acirc;ng cao nhất trong một chu kỳ triều, nước r&ograve;ng l&agrave; l&uacute;c r&uacute;t thấp nhất; tuỳ chế độ triều của từng v&ugrave;ng (nhật triều hay b&aacute;n nhật triều) m&agrave; mỗi ng&agrave;y c&oacute; thể c&oacute; 1&ndash;2 lần nước lớn v&agrave; 1&ndash;2 lần nước r&ograve;ng, với giờ xuất hiện lệch dần khoảng 45 ph&uacute;t mỗi ng&agrave;y. Việt Nam c&oacute; đủ c&aacute;c chế độ triều xen kẽ dọc hơn 3.200km bờ biển: nhật triều đều điển h&igrave;nh ở Vịnh Bắc Bộ (H&ograve;n Dấu, H&ograve;n Gai), b&aacute;n nhật triều mạnh nhất cả nước ở khu vực Vũng T&agrave;u &ndash; Cần Giờ &ndash; S&agrave;i G&ograve;n, v&agrave; nhật triều bi&ecirc;n độ nhỏ nhất ở v&ugrave;ng T&acirc;y Nam Bộ (H&agrave; Ti&ecirc;n, Rạch Gi&aacute;, Ph&uacute; Quốc).

Ngư d&acirc;n, người c&acirc;u c&aacute;, c&agrave;o ngh&ecirc;u, bắt ốc thường canh lịch con nước để ra khơi hoặc lội b&atilde;i đ&uacute;ng l&uacute;c; người tắm biển, ch&egrave;o SUP, lặn biển xem giờ triều để đảm bảo an to&agrave;n; thuyền trưởng v&agrave; người điều khiển phương tiện thủy d&ugrave;ng để t&iacute;nh to&aacute;n độ s&acirc;u luồng lạch trước khi di chuyển.

Thủy triều sinh ra chủ yếu do lực hấp dẫn của Mặt Trăng v&agrave; Mặt Trời t&aacute;c động l&ecirc;n Tr&aacute;i Đất. V&agrave;o ng&agrave;y m&ugrave;ng Một v&agrave; ng&agrave;y Rằm &acirc;m lịch (con nước rong), bi&ecirc;n độ triều lớn nhất trong th&aacute;ng, nước l&ecirc;n rất cao v&agrave; xuống rất thấp; v&agrave;o khoảng thượng huyền, hạ huyền giữa hai kỳ đ&oacute; (con nước k&eacute;m), bi&ecirc;n độ triều nhỏ nhất, mực nước biến động nhẹ hơn hẳn.
